Concept

kimonoé, a luxury kimono-robe brand was launched in Kyoto in 2011 with the simple wish to provide “authentic kimonos for the lifestyles of today”. kimonoé aims to be the first to offer you the opportunity to wear traditionally luxurious Japanese garments with a contemporary twist. Great care has been taken to stay as true as possible to the original principles of authentic kimono design and manufacturing, whilst adding something fresh and original. In contrast to traditional kimono, these new designs make kimonos more accessible to everyone, regardless of nationality. It is not a dress, nor is it a jacket. It is not like anything you have worn until now. Put simply, it is an extended line of the traditional kimono.

Kyoto, kimono & Tomo

Formerly the imperial capital of Japan, Kyoto has always been at the heart of Japanese traditional culture. Kimono design, manufacture and tailoring has been always a leading industry in Kyoto and the district of Nishijin, situated in the north-west of Kyoto city, prospered at the centre of this industry. For Tomo, the fashion-focussed creator of “kimonoé”, the launch of her own line of kimono-robe designs has been a long-standing dream due to her family background of kimono manufacturers and fabric wholesalers from Nishijin. Such an environment has also made her aware of the complexities regarding traditional kimono dressing and maintenance, thereby giving rise to the creation of a more versatile, easy-to-wear design.

Tomo

Let me introduce myself. My name is Tomo and I am the creator of kimonoé. I think of myself as a “contemporary Kyotoite”, a fusion of the traditional and modern Kyoto woman. Born in Kyoto, I spent my early childhood in Tokyo and Osaka. In Europe I studied at the University of London, before being absorbed in the beauty of living in both Paris & Rome. Having come back full-circle to the roots of my hometown of Kyoto with a degree in Social Anthropology, I created a small agency focusing on providing luxury travel services for overseas visitors to Japan. My multifarious background has served as my inspiration for kimonoé. I hope you too will share my passion for the blend of traditional and modern that Japan has to offer and choose kimonoé to add even more style to your wardrobe!

How

The creation of each individual hand-made robe begins with the choice of drapery. From the hundreds of rolls of silk drapery on kimono manufacturers’ and wholesalers’ shelves, unique combinations are carefully selected. Next, the lining fabric and its colour are chosen to be specially dyed by a traditional craftsman. Every kimonoé robe is designed with careful consideration of colours, patterns, textiles' characters and the best combinations of all these elements to culminate in the most beautiful finished product. It is a unique garment, designed with the sophisticated client in mind. Whatever your desires, from an elegant outfit for that special occasion to something comfortable to relax in at home, kimonoé will be delighted to add that extra touch of glamour to your wardrobe together with a piece of the culture of Kyoto.

kimonoé, its name

This one letter may be added to the end of a sentence to create a mild and sweet sound with a subtle, underlying strength. 「京都はええとこどすえ。」 “Kyoto wa éétoko dosu é.”This means, “Kyoto is a comfortable place,”in the ancient Kyoto dialect which nowadays is spoken only by Geisha and pure Kyotoites.
